Honda 250N Superdream - Gear selection

I cannot select neutral neither can I determine which of the six gears is selected. Haynes suggest only that the selector forks are bent or that the geartrains are incorrectly assembled. I doubt both suggested causes and believe that the external lever may have slipped round the gearchange shaft to which it is secured by a pinch bolt and/or that the external adjustment linkage is not set up properly. Can anyone confirm, please or suggest another action? Thank you, hooray henry
