Baffle silencer

A motorcycle silencer (or muffler) is a device fitted to the end of the exhaust system that reduces the amount of noise emitted by the engine. The silencer contains a resonating chamber which is specifically designed to interfer with the sound waves produced by the engine - the silencer produces opposite sound waves to those leaving the machine, therefore cancelling each other out.
