Motorcycle practical test explained
Okay, you've passed your CBT and theory test with flying colours. What to do next??? It's very simple - pass your practical motorcycle test. Things get a bit more complicated for those under 21 who take the practical test, but I'll explain that under the 'restriced license' area (back one page).
The practical motorcycle test consists of various different tasks:
You must present your CBT certificate (DL196) before you take your test. You must also hand over your provisional licence and your theory test pass certificate.
Vehicle safety check questions and eyesight test
Before you even step near the motorcycle you will be asked to read a number plate to prove you can meet the eyesight requirements. You should be able to read a new number plate from 20 metres away. The instructor is also supposed to ask you a few vehicle safety questions. I can't guarantee I have all of them here, but it's a start:
-
Show where you check the oil level and tell the instructor how you would tell the engine had enough oil
- Show how you would check the horn is working
- Show where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell how you would tell if it was at a satisfactory level
- Show how lights and brake lights are working properly
- Show how you would tell the condition of the chain
- Show what steering checks you would make before riding (free handlebar movement)
- Show how to check the operation of the front brake
- Show how you would check the tyres for sufficient tread, inflation and good for road use
- Show how you would cut the engine off in an emergency
Motorcycle Riding ability test
The examiner will explain how the test will proceed and how the radio works. You will then be instructed via the radio earpiece (which is one way – you can't answer back) to start the motorcycle and move off. The instructor should give you plenty of time to act to commands – e.g. at the end of the road, turn left etc. You will then stop in a quiet road to perform some manoeuvres.
Motorcycle Test manoeuvres
An emergency stop is given on every motorcycle test and can be given at any time during the test.
The test examiner will ask the candidate to move off from a parked position and to turn the machine around to face the opposite way within the road width. You MUST use a lifesaver.
You must prove to the examiner that you can start, from a standstill, up a hill.
The end
When the test is over, the examiner will tell you whether you passed or failed. You can get feedback on your test, who will then analyse your performance during the test.
Passing the motorcycle test
If you pass and have a photocard driving licence issued after 1 March, 2004 the examiner will ask you if you want your full driving licence issued to you automatically. You will then be given a pass certificate to prove you passed your test. DVLA will then send you your new full licence by post within three weeks of you passing your practical test.
Once you pass your standard motorcycle test and you are under 21 years old you are restricted to machines of 25 kW (33 bhp) with a power to weight ratio of 0.16 kW/kg for two years.
Failing the motorcycle test
If you fail the test, ask the examiner for some feedback to help prepare for your next test. Your driving report form will also show you where you made any mistakes. You must wait at least 10 working days after your practical test before you can book your next one.
